There is an endless combination of herbs that can be used to treat dandruff, thinning hair, itchy scalp, dry hair and more. Many of these herbs not only improve the condition of your hair, but can bring out highlights and enrich your natural color. It’s easy to do and less expensive than store-bought natural conditioners.
- 1 C boiling water
- 3-4 T herbs
- 1 C water
- Optional: 1 T apple cider vinegar to remove buildup
- Optional: 10-20 drops of your favorite essential oil for fragrance
Steep herbs in the boiling water until the water has cooled to room temperature. Strain and combine liquid with your cup of additional water (and vinegar and essential oils if using).
Wash your hair as usual and then apply your herbal rinse. It is not necessary to rinse out your herbal concoction; it can be left in the hair if you choose. Tip: for easy application, I like to use the sort of condiment bottle you’d find in a restaurant for ketchup or mustard – the narrow tip makes it easy to direct the liquid where you want it.
The best teas for your hair color
- Black Tea reduces shedding, has astringent properties to reduce oil and will deepen the dark color of your hair while minimizing grays.
- Hibiscus tea can thicken hair by decreasing hair loss, soothe a dry scalp, treat dandruff and add shine to your hair – all while camouflaging the appearance gray hairs. It also aids in detangling.
- Sage also helps to cover grays and adds moisture to dry hair. It helps remove buildup and adds depth to dark hair.
- Rosemary brings out depth and adds richness to dark hair colors, treats dandruff and leaves hair soft and shiny.
- Chamomile tea can be used on any hair color, but it is recommended for blondes in this case because it won’t inadvertently transfer a dark color onto light hair, and will even bring out your highlights! Chamomile is known for its skin soothing and anti-inflammatory properties for treating the scalp. It also conditions hair and encourages growth.
- Green tea has the same hair loss prevention characteristics as black tea, but won’t darken light hair. It can also soothe dandruff and itchy scalp, while softening and strengthening hair.
- Calendula will gradually lighten your hair and impart a beautiful shine. Calendula is soothing for an irritated scalp and has anti-bacterial properties.
- Lemon juice is another natural hair lightener, but be aware that it can dry hair out.
- Rooibos tea is perfect for redheads, given its rich red color.
- Calendula brings out the highlights in auburn hair.
- Rose petals brighten red hair, are moisturizing, encourage growth and reduce scalp inflammation.

Any Hair Color
- Nettle leaf fights hair loss and will leave your hair soft, strong and extra shiny. Be careful picking it fresh, though – it’s called “stinging nettle” for a reason; wear gloves while handling fresh nettle to keep the stingers off your skin (once steeped, you can handle the herb with bare hands).
- The caffeine in caffeinated tea, when applied to the scalp, blocks the hormone responsible for hair loss.
- Lavender is good for oily hair and will also treat dandruff and itchy scalp.
